Origins of surname
We have no specific information on the derivation of this name, but as with other surnames starting 'Hou-', we suspect that it may be associated with houx, the French for holly. Although the name would appear to be French, our research suggests that the family probably came from Belgium.
The name first appeared in church records in 1818, but Les Hougueis, probably a variant, appeared as a fief name in 1331. Lucas Houguez, who is at the head of the tree below, lived in Alderney, and his grandson Abraham, who was born there, moved to Jersey.
- Les Hougueis 1331 (as a fief name)
