Origins of surname
This is a diminuitive of the French personal name Jacques, which then also became a surname. There are several geographical variations throughout France.
This name was fairly common in the 17th century, when at least two different families can be traced, and there are baptisms and burial records going back to the previous century. By the middle of the 18th century the name appears to have died out, only to reappear in the mid 19th century, presumably with one or more immigrants from France.
The spelling in records varies from Jacquet to Jacquett within the same family. We have standardised on Jacquett throughout.
