Jersey Chantry Certificate

In the Middle Ages, people of sufficient means could make an endowment to their Church to provide for masses to be said after their death. In Jersey these endowments were usually in the form of a rente

These religious foundations and endowments were confiscated under the terms of the Chantries Acts of 1545 and 1547. Under the second Act, all colleges, free chapels, chantries and fraternities became the property of the King, in whom vested also all manner of endowments for the maintenance of priests, of obits and of lights in churches and chapels. This Act also provided for the appointment of Commissioners, who were to make surveys of these foundations and endowments throughout the country.

The documents incorporating the results of these surveys were filed in the Court of Augmentations, which dealt with property belonging to the Crown, and are known as Chantry Certificates.

In Jersey a similar survey appears to have been made nearly two years before Commissioners were appointed to act in the Island and an original manuscript from 1550 (which is not, as sometimes suggested, a list of endowments, but a record of the sales of endowments and other assets by the Commissioners) was transcribed in 1975 by Sydney Bisson and fellow members of La Société Jersiaise The document includes the following names and is one of the earliest surviving documents to include such a large number of names of Jersey people.

The very nature of the document indicates that many were no longer alive at the time, and depending on the generosity of their endowment, may have been dead for many years.
