Origins of surname

The name may have Irish, Scottish or English orgins. It is, of course, possible that it developed separately in all three countries in the dim, distant past, for it is a very old surname. The suggested Irish derivation is from the old Gaelic name "O'Ceallaigh". The name may also come from the lands of Kelly, near Arbroath, derived from the Gaelic coille for wood or grove, or from the Devonshire village recorded as 'Kelli' in the 1194 Pipe Rolls, also from the Gaelic for 'grove'.

Early records

The name made its first appearance in Jersey church registers in 1793 with the baptism of William son of John Kelly and Catherine, in St Brelade.
