Origins of surname

This name, common in Normandy as Goupil and Legoupil is derived from the old French golpil, meaning fox.

Early records

Known in Jersey as Gopil as early as 1255, the name first appears in the St Brelade church registers in 1560 with the baptism of Rauline, daughter of Pierre.

However, Catherine Le Goupil (1507- ) is known to have married Nicolas Martel (1490- ) in St Brelade, the home parish of both of them, in 1528
