Origins of surname

Although the words are the same in French and English, this surname would not signify someone of noble birth, because they would have had a specific family name. It is far more likely to be one of those surnames based on irony, signifying someone who behaved as if they were noble, but almost certainly were not.

Early records

The name first appears in Jersey records in 1690 with the marriage of Jean Le Noble to Susanne Filleul in St Clement. The baptism of Jean Le Noble, son of Jean and Susanne Pirouet followed in Grouville in 1695. It is believed that this is the same couple and that one of the mother's surnames was wrongly recorded.

Variants

  • Le Noble
  • Noble
  • Lenoble
