Origins of surname

This is a name from Normandy, where there are hamlets with the same name. The suggestion that the name originates with a diving seabird would seem to indicate that the inland hamlets were named after a person, rather than the other way round. The name may simply mean 'he who dives well'.

Early records

There are only two Church of England baptisms, in 1888 and 1911, but there may well be Roman Catholic records yet to be made available online
