Origins of surname

This name is French for 'the ruler', and although we have not found any specific derivation in our usual sources, it is likely that the name was given to the head of a small community or someone who behaved as if he were in charge.

Early records

The name first appears in 1689 with the baptism of Pierre, son of Francois. The last seven baptisms from 1760 to 1789 were all girls, explaining why the name appears to have died out in the late 18th century.

Variants

  • Le Regle
