Origins of surname

The Normandy version of the name is Lécaude, derived from Lécaudé, and becoming Lécaudey in the Manche department. It indicated a seller of d'échaudés, light pastry cakes warmed and then cooked in the oven.

Early records

The name certainly changed after Philippe Lescaudey emigrated to America in the 1680s, but there is considerable confusion over the spelling of the name in earlier generations in Jersey. We have standardised on Lecaudey, but the first seven records in the St Ouen baptism register in the 17th century include five different spellings: Lescaudey, Lecaudey, LeCaude, Lescode and Lescaude.

The first baptism record in Jersey is that of Philippe, son of Abraham, in St Ouen in 1637, but it now seems generally accepted that all his ancestors in the tree below were born in Jersey.

Variants

  • Lecaudey
  • Lescaude 1569
  • Lescaudey
  • Le Caude, found in American histories but probably never used in Jersey
  • Lescauld 1607
  • Cody, the name adopted by emigrants to the USA
  • Caudy, a half-way stage between Lescaudey and Cody

Buffalo Bill

One of America's greatest folk heroes, 'Buffalo Bill' Cody, is a direct descendant of the Jersey Lescaudys. He was the 3xgreat grandson of Philippe Lescaudy, who emigrated to Massachusetts in the 1680s with his wife Martha Le Brocq.

Given the important place he holds in American history it is amazing how much misleading information abounds in written and online histories about his ancestry.
