Origins of surname

From the old English Maene = 'common' and leah = 'clearing', this name would have been given to someone living in a clearing in a wood on common land. The name may also be derived from a Medieval nickname for someone who was brave or virile

Early records

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism of Jean Manley, son of Charles and Sarra Le Brun, in St Ouen in 1756. The couple had three more children. The spelling Manly did not appear in church registers until 1829. There are problems with some of the records because both spellings can be found for baptisms of siblings, and for the same family from one census to the next
