Origins of surname

This name comes from Irish royalty and nobility, and means son of 'Diarmuid', the 'free man'.

Early records

The name first appeared in St Helier's baptism register in the 1830s, with the baptism of five children of William McDermott and Elizabeth Damerel between 1834 and 1842. The mother's name has been transcribed as Demeral, Demorel and Damerel, but it appears that she may actually have been Elizabeth Damerel Allen. The 1851 census shows William as having been born in St Brelade, but he does not appear in the parish baptism register. Elizabeth was born in Devon and they were not married in Jersey.
