Mortain is a small town in inland Basse Normandie. It's main link to Jersey is that King John, who lost his French territories in 1204 but retained the Channel Islands, was Duc de Mortain before he came to the throne. Mortain was flattened in August 1944 as American troops forced the Germans out, and totally rebuilt afterwards.

It's more recent 'claim to fame' is that it is the closest town to where Jerripedia editor Mike Bisson and his wife have lived in Normandy since 2007
