Origins of surname

This surname is derived from the old English north = 'north' and tun = 'settlement'; someone coming from a settlement in the north. This also gave rise to a number of locational names

Early records

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism of Jeanne, daughter of Simeon Norton, in St Helier in 1661. There was then a long gap until 1820, when the first child of George and Jane Bradley was baptised in Grouville
