Origins of surname

Although this name is shown by otherwise highly reliable sources as a variant of Paul, we believe that the two are quite distinct, Paul coming from the Latin paulus and Poole and its variants from the old English pol, describing a person who lived by a small lake or stream. There are several places in Britain with the name Poole, or Pool.

Early records

The first Poole record in Jersey is the marriage of soldier Robert Poole and Charlotte Anne Le Geyt at St Helier in 1815. They had three children baptised in the parish between then and 1818.

Variants

  • Poole
  • Pool
  • Pole
  • Pooley baptisms previously listed on Poole page but now transferred to new page (coming soon)
