Origins of surname
Although most references link this surname to the head of the Roman Catholic Church, it has probably only the vaguest of connections, having perhaps been accorded to an ecclesiastic behaving autocratically, or a laymen with an ecclesiastical appearance.
The name first appeared in Jersey records with the baptism of Edward, son of James Pope, in St Helier in 1723. It would be almost another century before a family became established.
- Le Pope
