Origins of surname
This was an occupational name for an official responsible for obtaining the supplies required by a monastery or manor house, from Anglo-Norman French purchacer 'to acquire or buy' (Old French pourchacier, from chacier 'to chase or catch'
Soldier John Purchase was buried in St Helier in 1813.
The next appearance of the name in Jersey records was in the St Helier marriage register in 1823, for the wedding of John Purchase and Esther Le Feuvre. Both bride and groom are recorded as coming from St Helier, but it is unlikely that John was born in Jersey.
