Origins of surname
It is not absolutely clear whether Roissy and Roissier are variants of the same name, but there does at least seem to have been confusion between the two in Jersey, with children baptised as Roissy to couples married as Roissier.
We have not found either spelling in our usual French sources but Roissard is said to be a name from the Manche department of Normandy. It is believed to derive from roussir, meaning to char or brown hemp for rope making and the surname is believed to have come either from a place where this work was undertaken or to have been given to someone undertaking the work.
The Roissy family first appear in Grouville records in 1589. Strangely Charles Stevens' Comprehensive list of Jersey surnames makes no mention of Roissy, although it does include Roissier, dating it from 1668, and Roessy from 1528.
Roissier baptisms first appear in 1613.
There is a record of the marriage of Drouet Roissier to Thomasse Nicolle in St Saviour in October 1587, but this is believed to be another error because the baptisms of the couple's children in Grouville over the next 12 years are all recorded as Roissy.
The marriage of Richard Roissy of Grouville to Elizabeth Gallie was recorded in St Helier in 1774 under 'Roissier'.
