Origins of surname
This was the name given to someone who worked with a shovel or made them for a living.
The name first appeared in the St Helier baptism register in 1837 with the baptism of the first of four children of Henry and Mary Beckford, not Pickford as is shown in some online trees. The couple came to Jersey from Alvechurch, Worcester, and already had one daughter born in 1831. They are said to have married in Jersey in 1836, but we have not found a record of the marriage.
