Origins of surname

This name come from the Latin silva for wood and identified a dweller in a wood. Three Popes had this name and it was first used in England by clerics, probably imitating the Popes rather than themselves living in woods.

Early records

The first appearance in Jersey baptism records are the five children of John Silvester and Rachel, in St Ouen, from 1878 onwards.

Variations

  • Silvester
  • Sylvester
