Origin of Surname
The derivation of this name is not certain, but it would appear to derive from the old French sorel (red) and soleil (sun). Perhaps it was a name given to someone with sunburn!
The family appear to have come to Jersey in 1709, when the Rev Jean Baptiste Sorsoleil, from France, was appointed Rector of St Lawrence, a position he held for 20 years. The name has now died out in Jersey, but is to be found in the Eastern USA.
