Origins of surname

This started as a nickname in the 16th century for a satirical person, writer or public speaker who liked upsetting the establishment; it could also possibly refer to a firework maker

Early records

The name first appeared in the St Helier baptism register in 1836, with Henry, son of Henry Squibb and Hannah. It was John Squibb and Mary Meech who headed the first family to become established, starting with the baptism of their son William John in 1844.
