Origin of Surname

I have not been able to find an explanation for the origin of this name, but I think we can assume that it comes from the French for slow; though whether this refers to physical or mental slowness, is open to question. Probably the best clue is the family motto (from the Priaulx Library) "Tardif haste-toi".

The surname can be found in island records as early as 1364[1]

Variants

Family Trees

My Tardif family tree has 501 members plus wives and husbands. It goes back to Jean Tardif who married Collete Le Ray in Castel in 1618. I don't propose to add this to Donkipedia until the site can deal with Gedcoms, but if anyone wishes to contact me they can find my e-mail address under Tardif on the John Fuller Memorial Surname interests List.

Related Places

The main concentration of Tardifs was in St Martin, though inevitably many of them moved to St Peter Port.
