The Le Gros Bisson family of St Ouen and St Mary

Descendants of Robin Le Gros Bisson

This is the definitive tree of the Le Gros Bisson branch of the family, who lived in early generations either side of the border between St Ouen and St Mary in the north-west of Jersey. It was added to the site in March 2010, within days of its launch, and has been reviewed and expanded on a number of occasions since.

Jerripedia editor Mike Bisson, who has a connection to the tree, says that an enormous amount of research went into it some time before he started the website - both by himself and other Le Gros Bisson descendants - but this was done at a time when the online resources now available were non-existent.

The tree had been sadly lacking in the details now found in most of our important trees and a major review in 2019 resulted in many details being added to the tree, as well as some missing names.

The emigrants to the USA adopted various spellings for the family name, and siblings in the early generations can be found with different variants. Some were baptised with one name and changed the spelling, or had changes imposed on them by American officals, later. The Extente of 1607, page 18, has a charge of 60 s 1d relief "for the Fief of Quetivel which Thomas Le Maistre and John Le Grosse Bisson, in right of their wives, the heires of John Payne doe hold." In fact, Thomas Le Maistre will have owed this on behalf of his father, François, in right of his wife, Margaret Gardner. The wife of Le Maistre, who was of St Ouen, being the elder, his descendants received the Fief of Quetivel, to which they later added the Fief Haubert and Seigneurie of St Ouen, which their descendants still hold. This entry in the 1607 Extente shows that Messervy was mistaken in his belief that John Gardner and Collette Payn had an only daughter, the wife of Le Maistre: ABSJ, X, 341

29. ↑ Emigrated to Canada, died Vancouver. Percy Bisson was Mike Bisson's paternal grandfather's elder brother, born in St Helier in 1883. Family gossip suggested that he lived in Canada, having been 'banished' from Jersey as a teenager by his parents for some untold misdemeanour. Although Mike knew that Percy had lived for most of his life in Vancouver and had been survived by his wife, Meg, he had precious few further details about him. Unearthing death certificates for Percy and Meg proved relatively easy with the assistance of a fellow family historian in Vancouver, and they revealed that the couple had had a son, James A Bisson. Percy was listed with his parents and younger brother in the 1891 Jersey census, but there was no sign of him by 1901. Had he really left the Island in his teens? However, more searches through the 1901 census eventually located Percy, his surname mistranscribed, living and working as a steward at the United Club in Beresford Street. This fitted well with the information that for most of his working life he was employed by the prestigious Vancouver Club in the city of the same name. Mike then found details on another website of Percy's voyage from Liverpool to Halifax in 1905 at the age of 22, but no trace of his wife, or bride-to-be, whom he by then knew to be Margaret Whetton, from Burton-on-Trent. Another check of their death certificates revealed that Margaret was several years younger than Percy. There the trail ran cold. A year or so later some family photographs supplied by a first cousin included a postcard from Percy and Margaret to their family back home, showing them in 1915 in Hamilton, Ontario, with their one-year-old baby James. The assistance of two other researchers in Ontario quickly revealed the fascinating story behind their marriage in Hamilton just a month earlier. Margaret was a widow, having first married in 1913 a James Arthur Bottomley, who was killed in a tragic accident, crushed between two railcars in April 1914. The accident was well reported in the Hamilton newspapers. All this, of course, suggests that James Arthur Bisson was not Percy's biological son, but he married his mother knowing that she was pregnant by her late husband and brought up the child as his own
