Origins of surname

This surname is derived from the personal name Walter, meaning 'people rule'. English sources say that it is of French origin; French sources say the reverse

Early records

In 1763, Ann Elizabeth Watkins, the daughter of unknown parents, was baptised in St Helier. Then there was a gap until 1844, but it was not until the 1850s, when the first of seven children of Charles Henry Watkins and Emma Walters was baptised, that a family became established.
