Since creating this page for Aspley it has become apparent that the spelling Asplet is much more common in Jersey. It is possible that there are two distinct families and that, where the name appears with different spellings within the same family group, this is a recording error or a transcription mistake Amelia Louise Asplet, born NSW, Australia, daughter of Jersey emigrant George Elias Asplet (1827-1899) and Isabella Stewart (1839-1874)

Origin of Surname
- Nothing has been found to indicate the origins of this name, which has been present in Jersey since at least 1450. It is believed that Aspley and Asplet are one family, although it is not clear when the different spellings appeared.

Charles Asplet (1813-1881) was a successful grocer and wine merchant in St Helier. He is remembered as a witty and cultured person. When Victor Hugo came to Jersey in self-exile he became a special friend of Charles and his brother Philippe. Hugo became unpopular in Jersey and eventually was forced to leave for Guernsey. Charles Asplet’s business suffered from his close association with Hugo.
Mary Asplet (1859-1882) was the daughter of Charles and his second wife, Mary Sohier. Also known as Molly, she was noted to be a witty, charming and attractive young woman. She died soon after this photo was taken, at the age of 22, of tuberculosis. She was buried in St Clement nine months after her father.

Think of searching for variants with or without a prefix, such as Le or De. To search for further variants, or for any other family name, just click on the appropriate link below for the first letter of the family name, and a new tab will open, giving you the option to choose baptism, marriage or burial records. You will then see a list of available names for that type of record and you can select any name from that list. That will display all records of the chosen type for that family name, and you can narrow the search by adding a given name, selecting a parish or setting start and end dates in the form you will see above. You can also change the family name, or search for a partial name if you are not certain of the spelling

New records
Starting in August 2020 we are adding several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
