Bienaime is shown in census returns as coming from France, but we have not been able to identify him in records there. He is shown in the 1851 Census as a 16-year-old agricultural labourer working on a Nicolle farm in St Saviour. This suggests that he married in Jersey, but there is no record of this. In 1861 he was living at La Rocque with his wife Susan, who was a year older than him, and their two-year-old son Alfred. Two doors away was a Mourant family. This may just have been a coincidence, but Susan was born in Grouville. Online trees which give a death date for Susan of 1858, a year before her son was born and three years before she was recorded in the census are obviously incorrect. She was still alive at the time of the 1871 census.
