The tree throws up a very interesting family story. At first we believed that Francis George Bisson Le Cras at Generation 5 might not fit into this tree at all. He was born on 7 December 1846 and baptised in St Helier on the 20th. He was baptised Bisson and the register shows him as the illegitimate son of Mary Bisson. His father is shown as Le Cras, but his forename is illegible, although it looks more like Pierre than Philippe.

This suggests three possibilities. The first is that Mary Bisson was not married and named a Le Cras as father of her child. The second is that she was a widow and that her husband, a Le Cras, had died before her child was born. The third, and although probably the most unlikely, which does appear to be the case with Mary's child, is that the father was another Le Cras, possibly a close relative of her late husband.

The record of the marriage of Francis to Sarah Eastman in 1866 seems to confirm his position. He was named as Francis Bisson Le Cras, son of mariner Philip Le Cras. Census returns also show him as part of Mary's household with siblings Philip John and Henry Charles in 1851. There is no mention of Mary's husband. As a mariner he might have been at sea, but if Mary was already a widow when Francis George was born in 1846, that would also explain her husband's absence from the census. It is interesting that Francis George, at the age of four, was described in the census return as a scholar and pauper.

However, the picture is further complicated by the presence of a burial record for Philippe Le Cras in St Helier on 11 June 1845. He is shown aged 39 years and three months and a mariner. There are no other similar burials at the time so this must have been Mary's husband. But he died 18 months before the birth of Francis George, so he could not possibly have been his father.

Philippe had a younger brother Pierre, so was he the father of Francis George, and named as such on his baptism record. Whoever his father was, Francis George took the surname Le Cras, and passed it on to his children and their descendants. See family page for photographs

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
