This tree differs significantly from that originally submitted to us, which we believe to originate in an online tree which wrongly associates the Jersey family with a Denis family from Plumelin in southern Brittany. There was a Pierre Denis born in Plumelin in 1852, but he was the son of Mathurin and Marguerite Eveno. He was married twice, to Marie Anne Le Breton and then Marie Louise Ropert, who is shown in the submitted tree as the wife of the Peter/Pierre who came to Jersey. However, Jersey census records show clearly that Pierre was the son of John and Francoise (mysteriously shown as Francisco in the Ancestry census transcription. They are found in French records as Jean-Marie Denis and Francoise Elisabeth Le Breton. Peter/Pierre did marry a Marie Louise, as confirmed by the census, which is probably how the confusion started. Although her surname is not known, she was not Marie Louise Ropert. The mistake made in associating a Jersey immigrant from France with the wrong family is unfortunately quite typical of what is to be found in some online trees. We contacted the tree's author, who in 2016 accepted the alternative lineage for the Jersey family and promised to carry out fresh research, hoping to take the Denis line back into the 18th century and beyond, to compensate for what has been lost from what they previously believed to be a much longer family tree. However, the tree remains unchanged

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
