This tree was added to the site in 2011 and reviewed in 2019. Original research by Guy Dixon featured in The Channel Islands Family History Society Journal, Nos 85 and 86 (2000) under the heading The Mallets of Jersey, 1180-1750. Those featured on this page as living after 1750, were added by him at a later date, but are not intended to represent a full coverage of the tree`s descendants

Mallet family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Sara, described as the eldest daughter of the late Jean Mallet, son of Michel, sued her eldest brother, Jean, on 9th October 1662 for her inheritance: RP 17/178 (1662)
  2. Jean went to settle in Grouville. He sold two parcels of his St Martin land in 1697, being two fields `in Le Clos Marets de Haut, near to the Parcq de Belle Fontaine`, this being within the vicinity of Houguemont: RP 26/178 (1697)
  3. Mentioned also as being the wife of Jean Mallet in the Cour de Samedi (9th June 1707)
  4. Godfather: Michel Mallet
  5. Although the marriage record has not been found, see below for proof of the marriage. Property could only be inherited by legitimate issue. The Généalogie de la Famille Messervy gives 1706 for this marriage, although the source is obscure
  6. The Jersey genealogist Pepperell, working in the 1950s and 1960s recorded, presumably from deeds, that Michel Mallet`s wife, Jeanne Messervy, was the daughter of Aaron Messervy of La Clôture, no doubt a mistake for La Couture, which passed from the Messervys to Michel and Jeanne`s eldest and only surviving daughter, Jeanne, the wife of Philippe Mallet. Their descendants held this property well into the 19th century
  7. Jeanne Mallet was buried in 1690 as the "veuve Philippe Mallet, de La Couture." The property of this name is in the vicinity of La Ville ès Philippes, Grouville. Her husband had been buried either on 19th November 1682 or 7th January 1683, having been one of two contemporary namesakes in St Martin. He died childless: RP 26/117 (1696)
  8. Two Elizabeth Mallets could have married Clement Hubert in 1674, either Elizabeth, daughter of Jean Mallet, son of Jacques, or this Elizabeth, daughter of Jean, son of Michel. In the Decréts (26th October 1682), Clement Hubert`s action, in right of his wife, against the tutor of the under-aged children of Jean Mallet is mentioned. Jean, son of Jacques, was still alive at this time and had no under-aged children. Furthermore, the other parties mentioned were Michel Mallet, Jeanne Mallet, Philippe Payn, in right of his wife, and Charles Mallet. In the Decréts (7th June 1683), the same parties agreed to counsel Matthieu Syvret, tutor of the children of Jean Mallet, son of Jean, son of Michel, which Jean had died in 1676, aged 35. Thus Hubert`s wife was this Elizabeth, shown above
  9. Founder of the line of Mallets at Houguemont, Faldouet. He was sued in 1709 by the King`s Receiver for 45 Livres owed to the Crown on half the nearby Parc de Belle Fontaine: C. Samedi, Volume 81 (13th May 1709). His signature is on the Oath of Association Roll. This branch of the Mallet family had the custom of adding, each generation, their names to those already engraved on the farm`s west chimney, which came to resemble a genealogy in stone, albeit now scarcely legible
  10. See note below, regarding the death of Jean Mallet, George`s half-brother, in generation 3, for George`s date of burial
  11. The recording of this marriage, as with so many others, was probably forgotten by the incumbent or his clerk. Marthe Badier is described, however, as Philippe`s wife, in the baptismal records of their children
  12. Marie was baptized as `fille de Philippe`. The godparents of the children of Marie Mallet and Clement Messervy show her to have been this `fille`
  13. Philippe was baptized as the `child of Philippe` in 1721/2. A deed dated 19th September 1767 identifies him, whereby Me Jean Mallet (1726-1774), younger son of the late Me Philippe Mallet, sold his portion of the inheritance to his elder brother, Philippe, with both brothers agreeing to contribute to the dowry of their mother, Marthe Badier: RP 49/234 (1767). Philippe is furthermore described on 26th January 1760 as `Philippe junior`, this being the date of his father`s burial and that of Philippe`s daughter, Elizabeth. Philippe`s godparents had been Renault Badier and Anne Mallet, his wife, these being his maternal grandparents. His Will, dated 31st December 1759, provides for a payment to the poor of St Martin and makes generous provision for his widow, Marthe Badier
  14. Philippe lost his wife, Marie Le Boutillier, the mother of their five children in April 1804. Marrying again in November, to Marie Le Brocq of St Mary, he himself died the following March (1805). Marie and her husband are named and her parentage given, in RP 84/172 (1796)
  15. RP 115/269 (1813)
  16. Senior representative of the Mallets of Faldouet: J.B. Payne (ed.), An Armorial of Jersey (1865). He died in July 1884, of heart trouble, aged 65 years 11 months
  17. Seaman in 1841 census, living at home with his family at Houguemont, then Ship`s Carpenter in 1861, living with his wife, Eleanor, at 27, Roseville Street, St Helier. He was buried in St Martin in 1868, aged 46. They do not appear to have had any children
  18. Labourer in 1851, living at home unmarried, in St Martin: UK Census, St Martin, Jersey
  19. Shipwright in 1841, living at home in St Martin, and living there as a Carpenter in 1851: UK Censuses, St Martin, Jersey. He was a Shipwright in April 1856, marrying in St Jude`s, Whitechapel, Middlesex, and giving his exact age of 30 years. He gave his father as Philip Mallet, Farmer. The bride was Anne Girling, who was the daughter of George, a Farmer. In 1861, they were living in Southampton. The census provides his place of birth "Jersey" and hers was "Yoxford, Suffolk". From the registers of that parish, we find, once again, that her father was George and also that her mother was Sarah, nee Smith. It should be noted that Anne gave her age as being identical to that of the bridegroom, both on marrying and in the 1861 census. Her parish register shows her in fact to have been seven years his junior. They had no children living with them in 1861: UK Census, Southampton
  20. The St Martin register has her baptism in 1827 as "Anne Mallet" - perhaps a subconscious association with her mother`s name, Susanne- but as Mary Mallet, she features in censuses with her household, whereas Anne was unknown. Mary was buried in St Martin in 1894, aged 66 years and 6 months
  21. Tailor, living at home, in St Martin, in 1851: Ibid. He was buried in St Martin in 1910, aged 80 years and 11 months: Burial Register, St Martin. His stated age on marrying on 10th July 1864 was reduced by three years, from 35 to 32. However, the 1881 census has him as being 52, giving a correct year of birth, in 1829, as does the 1891 census. Charles and his family were living at St Etienne, on St Martin`s Main Road in 1871 and 1881
  22. Cultivator, as were then both the groom and his father, Philippe
  23. Died aged 9 months
  24. Farmer, as was his father
  25. Painter, living in Gorey at the time of his marriage. He described himself as being of "full age" and having been born in St Saviour. He said of his father, that he was Charles Mallet, Tailor, deceased. Charles Mallet, generation 7, is the only known Charles to have been a Tailor. He died in 1910, four years before his son`s marriage
  26. Carpenter
  27. Carpenter, aged 40, living at home, in St Martin, in the 1851 census. His age at death has added three years to his life but the name Helier is unambiguous. He was unmarried in 1871, living at home, at Houguemont
  28. An unmarried farmer, aged 38 in 1871, living at Houguemont, no doubt farming together with his brother, Philippe: 1871 UK Census. He may have been the William who was buried in St Martin in January 1910, aged "80". His exact age may have been rounded up to 80, although he was probably then 77, depending on his age at the time of baptism
  29. Elizabeth was unmarried in 1871: 1871 UK Census
  30. A seaman at the time of the 1841 census (St Martin) and a Labourer in that of 1851, living with his brother Philippe. He was unmarried, dying aged 72
  31. Mason, aged "40", living in Hill Street, St Helier: UK Census, St Helier (1841). In the 1861 census, St Helier, he and Jeanne are easily identifiable. His occupation was still Mason and his age 64, being his 64th year. Jeanne was 60. With them was their twelve year-old daughter Margaret, born in the parish. She was Margaret Elizabeth Mallet, baptised there in December 1848
  32. Jeanne Mallet, was buried in St Helier in 1866, aged 62, as the `widow of George Mallet`, whose own burial has not yet been identified
  33. Ropemaker`s apprentice in the 1841 St Helier Census and, on marriage in 1846, Sailor. He latterly returned to being a ropemaker. His father was described as a Mason on his son`s marriage
  34. Fisherman
  35. Baker in 1865, on marriage, probably so employed; general labourer in 1881 and Docker
  36. Seaman, aged 14, in 1881: UK Census, St Helier, and on marriage, when he described his father`s occupation as "Long shore man", being one that worked `along the shore`, namely a Docker
  37. Served in WW1; Warrant Officer, Royal Engineers. He married in England
  38. Blacksmith`s apprentice (1841), Ropemaker (1851) and in 1871, Steward on board Steamer (1871). He was living with his St Helier-born wife Jane, aged 42, in the latter year, but with no children at home: UK Censuses, Jersey
  39. Godparents: Jean Mallet and Esther Marie Mallet

  42. Godparents: Jean Badier and Elizabeth Le Feuvre, his wife. They were the child`s maternal uncle and aunt
  43. RP 49/234 (1767). Judging by the godparents of his children, this was the Jean Mallet who settled in St Helier, where his son was living in `La Ville`, the Town, in 1815: Jersey Military Census (1815)
  44. RP 84/172 (1st October 1796): `Mse Anne Mallet, Mse Marie Mallet, wife of Me Jean Delival, daughters of Jean Mallet and Anne Collas, his wife, sold inheritance to Jean Mallet, their eldest brother
  45. George was, by elimination, the `child of Philippe` buried in 1729
  46. Either Sara or Rachel, Michel`s daughter of his second marriage, will have been the `daughter of Michel` buried in 1714, St Martin
  47. See note above, regarding `the daughter of Michel` who was buried in 1714
  48. Francois was in 1815 a militiaman serving at La Rocque battery with his brother, Hugh: Military Census, 1815. The marriage record of Francois` son Jean, states that his father was a labourer, as had probably been his father, Michel. Some of his children described Francois` occupation, at the time of their marriages, as Farmer. In the Grouville baptisms of his children, he was alternately Farmer, Labourer and Fisherman. The family lived on the west side of the main road at La Rocque, between Martellos No. 1 and 2: Hugh Godfray`s Map of Jersey (1849), `F. Mallet` [junr.]

  56. George Francis` name appears among those of the other children of Clement Abraham Mallet and his wife in censuses. His date of birth is estimated from his age in that of 1911. He was a Cabinet Maker
  57. The register entry in 1921 was witnessed by Rita Mallet and William Kirkwood Hewitt Mallet
  58. Draper on marriage and Railway Clerk in the St Helier censuses, 1901 and 1911. In 1901 the family was living at 2, Windsor Villas, Val Plaisant, St Helier. He gave on the 1911 census form, his place of birth as St Helier, and that of his father as Grouville

  81. Farmer
  82. Godparents: Charles Mallet and Mary Le Gros

His father, George senior, was a Farmer of 6 Acres and Publican at the "Post Inn". The younger George also a farmer, in his case, of 10 acres in 1881, at Pied de Mahault Road. 136. In November and December 1714, St Martin burials include a son of Michel and a child of Michel. Jean was then a child, of whom nothing further is known, so was probably the latter, whilst George, aged 30, a son of Michel`s first marriage, would fit the description of an adult son
  137. Marriage record not found, Methodist?
  138. Charles`s baptism is, in some transcripts, wrongly recorded as that of a Clement Mallet. A deed dated 3rd October 1696 makes it clear that his name was Charles: RP 26/117 (1696). The parties to this deed were Jean Mallet, eldest son of the late Jean Mallet and of Jeanne Payn, his wife, and Michel Mallet, Jean`s younger brother, who were both described as heirs of their late uncles, Philippe Mallet and Charles, and of their aunt, Jeanne. See, also Decréts in 1682 and 1683. Charles had been in 1678 a merchant in St Malo, employing Matthieu Syvret as his procureur: Procurations (3rd September 1678)
