- ↑ A Farmer on marriage in 1879, Philippe features in the 1891 Trinity Census as such at La Vallette, Croiserie, living with his slightly older wife (whence the slight inflation of his age?), son Philip C. de Gruchy, aged 9, and unmarried sister-in-law, Rachel Mourant, aged 51. She and her sister, Mary Ann were born in St Helier. Philippe or his wife apparently thought he had actually been born in Trinity and had this entered on the census form. They were all living in 1901 in St Helier, at 7, Duhamel Place, with Philippe then working in his father`s original trade of Stonemason. At the time of the 1911 census, Philippe was in the General Hospital, recording his age and place of birth correctly as "56" and "St Martin", respectively. At home, this now being 12, Chevalier Road, his wife stated they had been married 31 years and had the one child, still living. Rachel Mourant still lived with the couple. It should be noted that Philippe stated on marriage that his father, François Jean, was a Blacksmith, when he had, in fact, been a Mason at Crown Villa, Rondin and was just settling into a new career as a Farmer. However, François Jean had been brought up at Haute Vue, where his own father was a farmer and blacksmith. He would thus have been able to perform any of these three tasks!

He was then minister at Scranton, Pennsylvania and Penn Yan, Medina, Ticonderoga and Skaneateles, all in New York State, USA. His obituary in The Penn Yan Democrat, on the 24th January 1929, remarks on a sad and singular occurrence. When Dr de Gruchy died in hospital on Saturday the 19th January at 9:30 in the evening, his wife, who was staying in Dundee with their elder daughter, was taken ill and died within six hours of her husband. Both were 71 years of age
