Descendants of Pierre Poingdestre

This tree by Guy Dixon previously formed part of Descendants of Michel Poingdestre, but was always described by him as being so located merely as a tentative placement. Until Pierre, himself, can be identified from among several contemporary namesakes in the Jersey Land Registry (RP), having a tree of his own, showing his descendants only, will give greater clarity

Poingdestre family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. The baptism of Pierre Poingdestre has yet to be found. He may have been a second cousin of Advocate Charles Poingdestre, a subject that can be resolved at the Jersey Land Registry. His burial entry was, however, verbose: "Mr Pierre Poingdestre de la Vingtaine du Mont au Prêtre, séjournant dans la Vingtaine du Mont à L`Abbé"
  2. Of Mont à L`Abbé, St Helier
  3. Widow of Jean Luce, see below. Widowed afresh in 1809, the Will of Jean Alexandre, dated 1818, mentions her as then being "widow of Mons. Pierre Poingdestre and ensuite of Mons. Matthieu Mauger". His Will features legacies to her, with remainder to her children, to be equally divided upon her death, as well as to other members of the family of her late husband, Pierre
  4. Godparents: Me Jean Poingdestre, Uncle, and Mse Rachel Coutanche, Widow of Me Jean Le Vavasseur dit Noel, Grandmother
  5. Lieutenant-Colonel RJMA; Jersey Language Poet
  6. Godparents: Me Elie Le Vesconte and Mse Elizabeth Poingdestre, his wife, Uncle and Aunt
  7. Jean Poingdestre and his brother Daniel Pierre Poingdestre must have died without issue by 1872, as a partage, recorded in the Jersey Land Registry on the 9th November of that year, relating to the property of their mother, Elizabeth Le Vavasseur dit Noel, names their senior nephew, Matthieu Le Geyt, Gentleman, as the principal heir. The junior heirs were Charles Pierre Toutain (1816- ), no doubt representing his younger siblings, Lucretia Julia (1820-1901) and William John (1825- ), and the Revd. James John Christie, M.A. with his sister, Mary Noel Christie. The partage also records that the said Elizabeth Le Vavasseur dit Noel had married firstly [1779, St Helier] Jean Luce, by whom there was a daughter, Elizabeth Luce, wife [in 1801] of Philippe Le Gros. The only child of the last union, Elizabeth Le Gros (1803-1871), although married, had died childless, as a result of which, her principal heir was the above Matthieu Le Geyt, Gent., together with his junior heirs. The old Jersey saying that contracts never lie, is perhaps a little challenged on this occasion. Elizabeth Le Vavasseur dit Noel`s Poingdestre second husband is named as "Jean", instead of "Pierre"--a confusion, perhaps with her father`s name or that of her first husband--and her eldest daughter, whose son was the principal heir, is described, against the very facts stated, as the "only daughter": R.P. 254/25
  8. Godparents: Me Charles Poingdestre, fils Pierre, and Mse Marie Coutanche
  9. Apothecary. Parents of Miss Mary Noel Christie and the Revd. James John Christie, M.A., who were among the co-heirs of their grandmother, Elizabeth Le Vavasseur dit Noel, whose surname was borne by Miss Christie
  10. Godparents: Matthieu Le Geyt Gent. senr., representing Matthieu Le Geyt Gent., junr. and Dlle Jeanne La Cloche
  11. They lived at Mont à L`Abbé, St Helier and were in 1820, perhaps when engaged to be married, godparents of Matthieu`s nephew, Louis Dennis Toutain. They had no issue of their own
  12. Godparents: Me Daniel Poingdestre and Mse Jeanne Gaudin, his wife, Uncle and Aunt
  13. Me Jean Poingdestre and Jeanne, his sister. The christening of the latter has yet to be found. Jean`s two daughters were beneficiaries named in the 1818 Will of their great-uncle, Jean Alexandre. Jean, himself, was described as the testator`s defunct nephew, verifying his placement, and leading to the discoveries of the christening dates of his daughters, the name of his wife and the date of their marriage
  14. Godparents: Me Elie Le Vesconte, Oncle, and Mse Jeanne Gaudin, Tante, wife of Me Daniel Poingdestre
  15. This marriage`s record has not yet been found but is confirmed by church records of their children`s christenings, as well as from the 1818 Will of Jean Alexandre. Their children included a son, Clement Dumaresq Godfray junior and a daughter, Elizabeth
  16. Godparents: Me Charles Poingdestre and Mse Elizabeth Le Boutillier
  17. Doctor; Surgeon, RJM. His godfather was Mr Charles Poingdestre, soon to become an advocate
  18. Doctor; died unmarried

  21. President, British Academy in Rome, where he lived and worked for 30 years

  25. Settled with his widowed mother and siblings, near his maternal cousins, Vidal: Canada 1901 Census. Was a Shipping, then General Clerk
  26. Of Regina, North West Territory, Canada, Farmer
  27. Henry appears to have initially emigrated to New Zealand, where a Henry Poingdestre, Accountant, was living, in 1882, in Dunedin, being perhaps the man of this name, in New Zealand, who had been in 1872-3- Manager of "The Von Moltke Gold Mining Company". Shortly after 1882, he seems to have moved to Australia, dying in 1885 in Murrumburrah, New South Wales. His details on death show that his parents were John and Caroline Poingdestre
  28. Gentleman, died aged 54
  29. Midshipman, RN His godparents were Charles Poingdestre Esq, Advocate, and Dlle Magdaleine Lempriere, wife of Mr Jean Poingdestre. Daniel Charles Poingdestre, serving aboard HMS Atholl, died in a naval hospital: PCC Will dated and proved in 1822, making his father his sole beneficiary
