Descendants of Raulin Benest

TreeIcon.png

This tree was previously Descendants of Josue Benest, based on one in Payne's Armorial of Jersey, but containing very few dates. A major review of the tree was carried out in 2019 by Guy Dixon and, although the position of one or two individuals is still open to question, and some dates are approximate, we now have much more confidence in this descendancy, which links to an earlier tree

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Initials and dates engraved at Mon Plaisir, St Lawrence: "RB:SBH 1670" and 1676, the latter date perhaps occasioned by alterations
  2. The St Lawrence Marriage entry in 1663 reads: "Mr Raulin Benest jun: [et] M[se] Sara Bailhache." Sara Bailhache came from an affluent St Lawrence family, most of whose male members were merchants and shipowners in St Aubin
  3. Of Mon Plaisir (St L); Constable of St Lawrence 1703-1705
  4. Messervy confirmed that Raulin's wife was Elizabeth Ahier: ABSJ VI, 261
  5. Jean`s godparents were mistakenly omitted in the church register
  6. Godparents: Jean Le Brun; Josué Ahier, Rachel Hamptonne widow of David Patriarche [Bailhache relatives]
  7. Godparents: Georges Benest [uncle]; Jean Le Gallais and Anne Patriarche, his wife [Bailhache relatives]
  8. The placement of Raulin and his three children is derived from the Armorial of Jersey, 124. While possible, it will nevertheless need verification from the Jersey Land Registry
  9. Elizabeth Le Gallais' identity, from an online source, is as yet unsubstantiated
  10. Heiress, passing Mon Plaisir to the Pallot family
  11. Godparents: Raulin Robin and Marie Bailhache, his wife
  12. Godparents: Josué Ahier, Rector, Salomon Pipon and Elizabeth Bailhache, his wife
  13. Godparents: Nicolas Bailhache and Elizabeth Benest
  14. Godparents: Captain George Benest and Marie Monamy, his wife
  15. Sara's baptism entry is missing; however, André Migault, described as Oncle was godfather to their great-nephew, André Benest, in 1774, so the placement, from the Armorial of Jersey, is no doubt correct
  16. Rector of St Saviour, Guernsey
  17. Godparents; Jean Le Couteur and Elizabeth, his sister
  18. Fils Aaron Benest
  19. Payne thought the next generation`s Philippe died in 1764. The latter was still living in 1768, whilst this generation's Elizabeth Mauger (a godmother) was the widow of that year. The 1706 godparents of Philippe were Philippe Le Couteur and his sister, Marie
  20. This marriage entry has not been found; it may have taken place in Guernsey, where the surname Mauger is common and where André Migault was a minister. It would also explain the absence for all four of their children of a baptismal entry in Jersey. Elizabeth Mauger was described in 1768 as the widow of Philippe Benest, when she stood as godmother of Philippe Benest, son of Philippe, son of Philippe, to whom she was grande-mère as well as godmother
  21. Perhaps born, with his siblings, in Guernsey. Godparents in the next generation confirm all their placements within the family, with the exception of George, who may have died before then
  22. Godparents confirm Philippe`s parents, as well as grandparents. He was described, on christening, as "son of Mons. Philippe Benest and of Mse Jeanne Hamon", with the godparents: Captain Philippe Vinter [Winter] senr. and Elizabeth Mauger, widow of Philippe Benest, grandmother of the child. The child was described on marriage in 1796 as "Gentleman", a rank that has no legal bearing on class or family but was from the 1790s consistent with his being a Lieutenant in the Militia
  23. 58th Regiment
  24. Godparents: Rev André Migault, uncle, and Elizabeth Mauger, widow of Philippe Benest, grandmother
  25. Godparents: Philippe Benest, father, representing Charles Shireff, uncle and Jenny Benest representing Sara Benest, wife of Charles Shireff, aunt
  26. Known from his entry here in the Armorial of Jersey
  27. Major in the Army
  28. 'Jenny', died in Ireland
  29. Placement based solely upon the Armorial of Jersey
  30. Master mariner. George was a minor in 1693. His godparents were Raulin Robin and Elizabeth Bailhache
  31. Daughter of Jean Le Brun, master mariner, from a family of Shipmasters and Merchants at St Aubin
  32. Of St Aubin, merchant and shipowner from 1730
  33. Marie Le Roy was the younger daughter and co-heiress of Henry Le Roy and Marie Le Brocq, daughter of Philippe, of St Aubin, Merchant and Shipowner
  34. Deputy-Viscount of Jersey, Colonel RJM
  35. Constable of St Brelade 1809-1814; Jurat 1814-1841
  36. Widow of Pierre Jean Villeneuve (1740-1786)
  37. Master Mariner and latterly, merchant and shipowner
  38. Lieutenant RJM; privateer captain?
  39. Born in Guernsey: 1851 Census, St Brelade, Jersey. On moving to his father`s Island, he lived at Summerville, St Aubin, probably inherited from his uncle and namesake, Jurat Benest, who was without surviving issue of his marriage
  40. Captain, East India Company Service
  41. Executrix and sole beneficiary of her mother`s Will, dated 21/03/1905 and proved in 1907. Her own Will, dated 1916 and proved in 1926, suggests that she was unmarried
  42. Born in Guernsey: 1851 Census, St Brelade, Jersey
  43. Master Mariner and Merchant (1790), living on the Bulwarks, St Aubin
  44. Colonel RJM. Land and property speculation was latterly to bankrupt Colonel de la Garde
  45. Captain of the East Regiment of Militia
