Origin of surname
The spelling Fautrart is found in the French department of Mayenne, and in Jersey. Fautrat is the spelling found in the Manche department of Normandy, although apparently it has died out there.
The derivation is uncertain, although it has been suggested that it comes from feutre, the French for felt, and indicated a worker in this material.
Early records
The name was known in Jersey in the late 16th and 17th centuries, but then appears to have died out.

Jean Fautrat, son of Cardin Fautrat and Jeannette Cocquerel, was a Jurat and Lieut-Bailiff. He married Bertanne Estur and died in 1644. Their son Jean Fautrat also served as a Jurat and Lieut-Bailiff. He married Elizabeth Fondan of Handois Jersey, the only daughter and sole heiress of Matthew Fondan and his wife Elizabeth daughter of Pierre Le Marchant. Jean and Elizabeth’s daughters, Anne and Elizabeth married William Le Marchant of L’Hyvreuse, St Peter Port and Guillaume de Beauvoir of Hommet.

New records
Starting in August 2020 we are adding several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
