The Earl of Chatham was still active in the British Army as a General when appointed Governor of Jersey at the age of 51, and is unlikely to have had any personal involvement in island affairs

General John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham, KG, PC (1756–1835) was a British peer and sailor.

Career

He was the eldest son of William Pitt the Elder and an elder brother of William Pitt the Younger. He was commissioned into the 47th Regiment of Foot in 1774.

Later he served in various capacities, including First Lord of the Admiralty, Lord Privy Seal and Lord President of the Council, in the Tory cabinets of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1809, during the Napoleonic Wars, he commanded the British force in the Walcheren Campaign.

At this time he was already Governor of Jersey, though he could have had little personal involvement in island affairs. He held office in the island until 1820, when he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar, a position he held until his death in 1835.
