Someone, almost always a Jurat, chosen by the States to act as Bailiff from the death or resignation of one Bailiff till the swearing in of his successor. The role has now become redundant with the introduction of the position of Deputy Bailiff, who assumes the Bailiff's responsibilities until a new appointment is made.
