King Street traders in 1834

The first year for which a comprehehsive list of the occupants of King Street properties can be found is 1880, but by studying earlier commercial directories, which list addresses of tradesmen of the time, a picture of the street's occupancy in earlier years can be built up.

This list is taken largely from Abraham Le Cras' Guide to Jersey of 1834, supplemented by other references found for the year, and for 1833. Where two different occupants are shown, they were either sharing the premises in 1834 or there had been a change between 1833 and 1834. It should be borne in mind that traders probably paid an advertising fee to be listed in these guides, so missing numbers do not necessarily imply that nobody was trading from those premises.

Street numbers in blue are links to articles tracing the history of these individual properties. Articles for properties with red numbers have still to be added to the site, but should be available soon.

Throughout the 19th century one of the commonest trades in the street was that of draper, or tailor, and 1834 is no exception, although there were considerably more grocers and wine and spirits suppliers in the earlier years than later in the century.

Although odd-numbered properties are to be found on the south side of the street and even numbers on the north, this list is shown in numerical order. No information is available for those numbers which are missing. Details of some further occupants in 1833 can be found in the pages devoted to each address
