Origin of Surname
Cloche is French for bell, but how the name became associated with a family is pure conjecture. Perhaps the original La Cloche was a bell ringer. Alternatively the name may be derived from the old French word cloche, meaning 'lame'.
Early records
It is known that in 1470 the family lived on the Fief Melelsches in a house previously owned by Thomas Fouques. By the end of the 16th century, profits accruing from the three big mills, Moulin de Malassis, Moulin de Grand Vaux and Moulin Louis Paul, alias Bertram, enabled them to relax from business activity and devote time to take a more active part in the political life of the island.
The name is found in the Extente of 1528. Baptism records start from 1545 but it is known that Etienne La Cloche was born in Trinity before 1519 and had a daughter Marie

So long has this family been located in Jersey that the names of its first members have not reached us.
It possessed at one time all the mills in the Valley of les Grands Vaux - no inconsiderable patrimony; and among other estates, one of its branches became possessed, by marriage, of the manor of Longueville, in the parish of St Saviour.
Some centuries ago, the church of St Helier was endowed with lands by a La Cloche, in order to participate in the then coveted privilege of being buried in its precincts.
The Rev Stephen La Cloche was Rector of St Ouen at the period of the Rebellion, and the bosom friend of Sir Philip De Carteret, whose dying request was that next to having an interview with his wife, he might be consoled by the ministrations of his reverend friend. This request, however, to the lasting disgrace of the local Republicans, was sternly refused.
Diarist
A diary kept by Jurat Benjamin La Cloche in the 17th century survives. It covers the years 1617-1652 and is full of news and gossip of the times, including information on a number of houses which survive to this day.

New records
Starting in August 2020 we are adding several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
