My 4 x great grandfather James Haggie (soldier), born abt 1769, married a Rachel Le Sauvage (born abt 1787) in Jersey. They had several children, one being George Haggie, born abt 1812 who we believe is my 3 x great grandfather. George Haggie married Mary Marguerite Perchard (bapt 8.10.1806) in Jersey in 1843. A John Haggie, born abt 1837, who we understand is the son of George and Mary Marguerite, arrived in New Zealand in the mid 1850’s as a teenager and married in 1859 to an Ellen Quinn in Dunedin, New Zealand. There are now hundreds of “Haggie” descendants in New Zealand and many of us would love to find out more about our Channel Island roots. Any information on particularly James Haggie (could be Haggily, Haggaiy) or any Haggie, plus their wives and families would be much appreciated. My husband and I are thinking of travelling to Jersey in the next year or two and would like as much information as we can before we travel this far.

The 1841 census shows my family forebears in Jersey; specifically

  • Charlotte Savage age 40 mother
  • Maria age 10
  • Grace Charlotte age 6
  • Charlotte Jane Henrietta 7 months, born in CI.

At Granville House, St Saviour. Unfortunately Ancestry (?) has mis-transcribed the names which are now indexed under Chalolda Sargee!! But there is no doubt about the original. Piece 1462, Book 7, Folio 36, page 12

And

  • Henry Savage age 12
  • George Savage age 11
  • Alexander Savage age 9
  • Patrick Savage age 8

In the house hold of John de Joux, Adelaide House, St Helier, which presumably was a boarding school. Piece 1461 /29 /17

They are the wife and children on Lt Col Patrick Savage born in Ireland 1783. He led an active overseas military career so it not a surprise that he is not found in the census. Reliable family information has it that he died on 27 February 1875 in Jersey. His death must lie between birth of youngest child 1840 and widow’s return to Belfast 1870.

Charlotte returned to Belfast about 1870 as a widow.

  • I cannot find any of the above in the 1851 or 1861 census.
  • I cannot find any record of Patrick Savage (born 1783/4); either in census, baptism of child, death or burial records.
  • I cannot find birth of Charlotte Jane Henrietta Savage born seven moths before the 1841 census date (civic or church)
  • Was it customary for army officers’ wives and families to reside in Jersey whilst they served abroad.
  • Does Adelaide House school or Granville House suggest anything?
  • A possible clue is that Patrick’s cousin, Lt Gen John Henry Savage RE died in Jersey in Feb 1866.

Any assistance would be most gratefully received.
