Wilfred Krichefski

Wilfred Krichefski was first elected to the States in 1945 as a Deputy for St Helier No 3 District, and at the next election he was returned as a Senator. He was one of a group of dominant politicians in the 1950s and '60s, serving as president of the Harbours and Airport Committee during the years of dramatic growth in air travel and the size of the airport, and as president of the Defence Committee.

Wilfred Harold Krichefski was born in St Helier where his grandfather had established a clothing business, in 1916. Brought up in London he attended Hendon Synagogue for which his grandfather had laid the foundation stone. Alone of five siblings he returned to work in the family business, leaving in 1940. He served in the British Army in WW2 in the Pay Corps.

He returned to Jersey in 1945, was elected a deputy and in 1951 he became the youngest elected Senator.

He was president of the Jewish community from its establishment in the early 1960s until his death at the age of 58 from a heart attack in a car crash while driving to the Airport on 12 December 1974.

In 2013, as part of the inquiry into abuse of children in Jersey, Krichefski was identified to police as having participated in child abuse at the boys' home, Haut de la Garenne, in the 1960s, confirming rumours which had circulated in the island over many years. The claim was repeated in 2014 in evidence to the official inquiry into child abuse.
