The Neptune

Teenager's fortune

Privateer captains and their crews may have risked ending up in a French prison, but many clearly thought the risk was worth taking. The extent to which wealth could be accumulated very rapidly is shown by some of the private papers of one Henry Le Bosquet, which are preserved at La Société Jersiaise. His banking records show that between 1800 and 1801, at the age of 15, he made £500 sterling on the privateer Neptune, a small fortune at the time.
