Only his mother Caroline is shown on the baptism record of Harcourt Campbell Carter Hart, and he took his mother's family name, although his given names clearly suggest that he was the son of Harcourt Adam Campbell Carter, born in India in 1833, the son of Samuel George Carter (1786-1858) and Isabella Louisa Howe Browne (1798-1858)
