A set of 1890s Photochrom pictures
Photochrom, sometimes spelled Fotochrom or Photochrome (although this term more often refers to later photographic postcards),
is a process for producing colorised images from black-and-white photographic negatives via the direct photographic transfer of a negative onto lithographic printing plates.
The photochrom process was most popular in the 1890s, when true color photography was first developed but was still commercially impractical.
Although these images were supplied to us with the date 1890, it is more likely that they were produced some time in the last decade of the 19th century, because the process had still not been licensed until the middle of the decade.
Although the Photochrom process was widely used for printing postcards in the 20th century, the pictures on this page were not postcards, but a larger format of print
