Descendants of Ludwig Abel



This tree was added to the site in 2014. It has been reviewed on a number of occasions since, most recently in 2023, when, despite continuing uncertainty about some of the relationships, more details, including a footnote with a suggested ancestry at the top of the tree, were added.

Brothers Ludwig Frederick and Michel Abel at generation 2 were previously believed to have been born in St Helier, Jersey to a father who came from Germany. It is now known that they were born in Stuttgart, Germany, and came to Jersey together, but not with their parents. Ludwig Frederick appears to have married twice. No baptism records have been found for either wife in Jersey. His brother is shown in the tree supplied to us as Johann Michael, and he is variously found as John or Johann Michael in online trees. He is shown as Michel in the record of his wedding, and Johann Michael at the baptisms of his earlier children, followed by John Michael later on.

There is much confusion in the submitted tree and online versions about who were the children of each brother. We have based this tree on the St Helier baptism records. The baptisms of Johann and John George, children of Michel and Marie Brumlot, took place a month apart in 1813. It may be that there was only one child, baptised at home and then in church, and that the names were anglicised between the two ceremonies.

Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

  1. ↑ Since this tree was submitted and reviewed before adding to the site in 2014, further information has come to light which purports to show the earlier ancestry of the Abel family in Germany. We have not been able to confirm the suggested lineage, which dates back to 1628, when Jacob Abel, son of another Jacob, is said to have been born in Durlach, Germany. He married Anna Maria Breuning, and they had a son Johann Konradin, who married Maria Barbara Weikersreuter, and had a son Konradin Ludwig (1718-1796). He married Eva Regina Bojons, and they are believed to have been the parents of Ludwig, the first member of the family to move to Jersey, and his nine siblings
