Beghins in 1911

From The Jerseyman
There is no doubt but that to be well shod is one of the essentials of life. A man is frequently determined by his headgear and his footgear, but putting aside appearances, ease and comfort in these days of rush and turmoil are to be envied, for what is there more annoying than uncomfortable boots and shoes?
To spend half an hour in the company of Mr Louis Beghin, briefly inspecting his extensive stock - and an inspection crammed into that space of time must necessarily be a short one - comes as an eye-opener, but when one considers the clientele which this old-established house has built up during the last half-century, it follows that the stock has to be kept up both extensive and up to date.
Over 50 years in business
As already stated, this firm has been studying the interests of the Jersey public for over fifty years, and today Mr Beghin makes the proud boast that there is not a person in Jersey, either rich or poor, whose requirements he is unable to attend to.
Mr Beghin is the first to admit the debt of gratitude which he owes to his staff, who are a practical combination in the true sense of the word. The characteristics of up-to-dateness and experience amongst the employees of any firm today cannot be too highly estimated, and in this particular line it is most desirable and expedient that employees should be able at a moment's notice to put their hands upon the very article which customer requires, and in this direction Mr Beghin's staff stands preeminent.
Premiere place aux dames. The ladies, bless them! are always keen on matters connected with footwear, and for many years Mr Beghin's emporium has been recognised as THE place where they may be suited. At the present moment the Wessex shoe is in great demand, and for style and durability it requires a lot of beating.

The gentlemen require something perhaps a little less elaborate but even more durable, and it is really surprising what a splendid pair of smart, substantial boots may be obtained for 8s 11d. We are referring to the 'Combined' brand, which, on account of their being made in half sizes, are guaranteed to give every satisfaction as regards fit. The 'Moccassin' brand must also claim attention, for Mr Beghin is the sole agent in Jersey therefore, and he does a tremendous trade in this particular boot, which is made of solid British leather and costs from half a guinea upwards. The working man can always rely on being well served.
Sports and holidays
Mr Beghin has always catered for the holiday maker, whilst in all classes of shoe leather suitable for wear whilst engaged in such sporting pursuits as football, tennis, cricket, cycling, etc, he has a most extensive etalage. Evening dress footwear is also well provided for.
The photographs which accompany this brief article give a slight idea of Mr Beghin's principal warehouse in King Street, the topmost one depicting the gentlemen's department and the lower the ladies. That Mr Beghin's business has increased by leaps and bounds is proved by the fact that he has opened several branch establishments in Broad Street and Halkett Place. He is ably supported in his business by his sons and daughters - a factor which also tends towards success in any commercial undertaking. One of our most esteemed townsmen, he has secured the proud position which he holds through his own personal perseverance.
Note: The images have been scanned from newsprint over a century old and are regrettably of poor quality, although every effort has been made to enhance them.
