Old Jersey Houses

Vol 2: Standing as it did at the foot of Mont Millais, this house was quite a landmark, with a mountain ash tree in front of the verandah, and jaunty little attic windows in the gables shaped to follow the lines of the roof. It has now been demolished.

By a fortunate chance, descendants of the first ovnwer contacted La Société Jersiaise and we have been able to learn more about it.

It was built by David Verner (1780-1826) who settled in Jersey for the sake of his health in about 1820, living for a time at The Cedars, and building Belvoir in 1824-25. Here he lived with his wife Anna, nee Cole, and their ten children, one of whom at least, Frederick Thomas David, was born at Belvoir in 1825.

The property changed hands, and in about 1910 it came into the Germain family.

The cement rendering was added between 1880 and 1890, the date being scratched on the stucco.
