Descendants of Henry Showell

Joshua Showell at generation 2 had a chequered history. He was a fisherman and on 11 March 1857 he was sentenced to eight days in prison with hard labour for boarding the Minerva in Guernsey with intent to steal. In April 1859, convicted by Jersey's Royal Court of burglary and theft of pewter pots and copper kettles, still aged just 17, and said to have no trade, he was sentenced to seven years transportation.
However, after three years in Dartmoor Prison, he was released in 1862. He was lucky to escape further serious punishment after attacking a policeman on his return to Jersey and by 1871 he was a cabinet maker, still living with his parents.
By 1874 he was married to Ann Neill and their first child was born that year. The couple had two more children before Joshua returned to work as a cod fisher on the Dogger Bank in the North Sea. But this was not successful and in 1884 he sailed to Australia with seven other Jersey fisherman looking for a new life pearling. He was drowned after falling overboard three years later, in 1887 at the age of 45.
His son Richard Henry Joshua served in the Boer War from 1899 to 1902 and as a gunner with the Royal Horse Artillery he won the Queen's and King's Medals, the Queen's with six clasps. When he returned to Jersey he worked on the docks as a labourer.
He served in the Royal Garrison Artillery in Jersey during the Great War and his younger brothers Archibald and Seth served in the Machine Gun Corps and Royal Field Artillery, respectively.
One day a day-labourer named Allo took Richard Henry's son Louis to the docks and asked if anyone would look after him. Richard and Adelaide took him in but never formally adopted him. By the time he died they owned their own house in Sand Street, St Helier

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
