Descendants of Rene Monet

This tree was added to the site in 2016 and reviewed in 2019, and again in 2021. Further information supplied in 2021 suggests that the father of Jacques (generation 2) who came to Jersey, was not another Jacques but Rene, as now shown. All baptisms and marriages in St Helier unless otherwise stated

Monet family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Born Hamonet and now believed to have been born in Blaison, Maine-et-Loire, France, the son of Jacques Hamonet (1671-1721) and Urbaine Piau (1677-1740), and to have died in Angers
  2. Online trees added since Jerripedia's Monet descendancy was first created show Rene and Marie having ten children, with Jacques followed by Jeanne Francoise (1738-1738), Jean (1740-1788), Ambroise (1741-1806), Nicolas (1743-1743), Francois (1745-1815), Etienne (1746-1752), Therese (1749-1779), Rene (1751-1751) and Anne (1753-1753). Rene changed his name officially from Hamonet to Monet in Angers in 1741 and his first three children, born before then, appear to have been known as Monet from then onwards.
  3. Jacques was a corporal in the Aquitaine Regiment and initially his period of engagement was 1756–1764, which corresponds to the Seven Years War (1756-1763). He was then re-engaged for another eight years. He was on a six-month leave of absence from his regiment at Strasbourg, but did not return, probably taking refuge in Jersey. He certainly disappears from French records at this point. This fits with a family story that they are descended from a French soldier who “escaped” from France in the 1700s. Jacques was very short, military records showing him as 5ft 2in (1.69m)
  4. Numerous online trees wrongly show Marie Racine as Jacques' mother with Jacques born in 1750. This is still most unlikely because she would only have been 12 at the time he was born. There seems little doubt from official records that he was born in 1735. The record of his 1769 marriage to Magdeleine Du Bois shows him as an etranger - foreigner - and a 1764 record shows him as a native of Angers

  21. Artist/sculptor lived in Bali and Australia. Many attempts have been made to link the Jersey Monets to the famous French artist Claude Monet, but there is no established link. Claude Monet's family came from the east of France when the Jersey Monets, from the west of the country, were already well established. Because he was an artist, people assumed that Jason Monet was descended from Claude Monet and, he appears to have done little to deny the connection. He even grew a Claude Monet–type beard and called his daughter Camille. Early newspaper reports say he was a direct descendent, but later, presumably when it was pointed out that Claude Monet had no direct descendants, he said his grandfather was a mason who worked on cathedrals throughout France and was Claude Monet’s brother. His grandfather was a plasterer, in St Helier

  34. Baptism record not found, but father confirmed by marriage record. Plasterer

  36. Tonnelier = cooper
