Descendants of Jean and Rachel Mauger

Captain Joshua Mauger of Jersey and Halifax, Nova Scotia; MP for Poole, Dorset
This tree, submitted by a descendant, contained earlier generations taking the tree to Thomas Mauger, of St Ouen, in the mid-17th century. The links given are not supported by baptism registers and we doubt that this branch of the Mauger family had its orgins in St Ouen - more likely in St John. [1] The tree below is currently believed to be accurate but needs confirmation from the Jersey Land Registry
Mauger family page and links to other trees
In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and References
- ↑ We have not been able to take the line any further back with any degree of certainty. We are also puzzled by the absence of any Mauger baptisms in St John after 1842. No baptism record has been found for any of the children at generations five and six. While we are happy that the first five generations as shown here are supported by church records, there must be a question mark over later generational links, although the use of Anley as a second forename for Francis (1896-1954) would be supported by his having an Anley grandmother. There are trees at Ancestry which conflict in earlier generations, and are not supported by church records.
- ↑ Master mariner, then merchant in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Poole, Dorset, of which town he was Member of Parliament. He is believed to have been the first Jerseyman elected an MP. His approximate date of birth is based upon his age at death in 1788, aged 63. In his 1788 will, proved on 30 April 1789, one of two executors he appointed was Mr Philip Nicholle (sic) of the parish of St John, Island of Jersey, merchant, who is my nephew in law, (a term referring to the husband of a niece). The principal beneficiaries were 'the children of my nieces, who were daughters of my late brother, John Mauger, whether sons or daughters of Mr Philip Nicolle of the Island of Jersey, andEdward Carrell, merchant, of the Island of Guernsey, in equal shares'
Philip de Veulle, writing in A Biographical Dictionary of Jersey, Volume 2, believed he was the son of Josue Mauger and Sara Le Couteur of St John, perhaps because they had a son named Jean at about the right time, 1727, and Joshua was known to have had a brother of this name, whose children were mentioned in his will. However, the Jean born in 1727 to Josue Mauger and Sara Le Couteur, would have then been married aged thirteen. AV Nicolle (1891-1970), the great-great-great-grandson of Jean Mauger, writing in ABSJ (1966), mentions in detail Jean`s brother, Joshua Mauger, but was apparently unaware of his parents - ↑ Master mariner and uncle of Josue, with whom he first went to sea
- ↑ Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia
- ↑ Major-General; Mayor of Southampton, 1795
- ↑ The couple were godparents in 1769 to Philippe Nicolle, the shipowner, and in 1777 to his sister Rachel, children of their daughter Elizabeth, wife of Philippe Nicolle
- ↑ Described at baptism as daughter of Jean Mauger, son of Jean, and of Rachel Mauger. Her godparents were Jean Mauger and Rachel de Carteret, his wife, father and mother of Jean Mauger, father of Rachel
- ↑ Of Guernsey, merchant
- ↑ Godparents: Jean Mauger and Rachel de Carteret
- ↑ Of Hérupe, St John, wool merchant
- ↑ Godparents: Captain Jean Mauger and Anne Caillet. They married a few months later, in 1745, in St John. Captain Jean Mauger (1721- ) was the child`s maternal uncle
- ↑ Constable of St John 1896 to 1906 before emigrating with his family to Western Australia
