Descendants of John Balston



This tree was first added to the site in 2016, and extended in 2017. A major review was conducted on the Jersey generations of the tree in 2018 and some additional information added. A further review by Mike Bisson in 2024 resulted in a major alteration between generations 2 and 10.

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records.   1. ↑ William was added to this tree in 2024 following a major review by Mike Bisson which concluded that the ancestry of the Thomas Balston, who arrived in Jersey in about 1848, as previously shown in this tree was incorrect. See generation 11, Jane Balston. The descent shown here is based on that in several online trees and has not been confirmed from Dorset records. Only immediate ancestors of Jane are shown in each generation

  8. ↑ Jane's position in this tree is uncertain. She was previously shown as the second wife of William (1759- ) in the other branch of the tree, but the general consensus now is that Thomas was her illegitimate son, and that another Jane Balston, from Bridport, Dorsey, also born in 1796, may have married William
  9. ↑ Moved to Jersey. Gardener. Thomas was first cousin once removed of George Loveless, leader of the infamous Tolpuddle Martyrs
  10. ↑ (Frederick) Charles was born in March 1949, a month after Thomas and Mary Ann's marriage. He was baptised Noble, after his father, Philip Noble, a soldier with whom Mary was living but who was posted away before the birth. Thomas and Mary brought Charles up as their own and he took his stepfather's family name
