Descendants of Regnault Coutanche

Coutanche of Coutanche Farm, Trinity, and Maupertuis, St Clement
This is the family tree of Alexander Coutanche, later Sir Alexander, and then Lord Coutanche, Jersey's wartime Bailiff. The tree was added to the site in 2011, enlarged in 2014 and reviewed in 2019.
A review of all our Coutanche trees in 2021 failed to find a connection between this tree and the definitive St John tree which includes generations which settled in Trinity in the mid-17th century, indicating that this branch was present in Trinity a century earlier. Indeed, The Jersey Chantry Certificate of 1550, 28, mentions Romyl Coustances of Trinity. The two families probably had a common ancestor, but he has not yet been identified. We are also unconvinced that Jean Coutanche, generation 7, married as previously shown, Jeanne Le Sueur, as godparents unanimously point elsewhere. The suggested marriage and its issue have been removed
The continuing absence of a number of marriage records is a cause for concern
Coutanche family page and links to other trees
In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references
- ↑ Probably son of Jean (1540- )
- ↑ Marriage record not found
- ↑ Marriage record not found, but confirmed by church records of the baptisms of their children
- ↑ A datestone at Coutanche Farm, RC ♥ IP 1696, believed to have been erected by Regnault, the only Coutanche of this name in church records, suggests that his wife was Jeanne Pinel. It is possible that he was married twice. Alternatively, the stone, which is poorly engraved and far from clear, may have read "RC ♥ IB 1696", for Regnault Coutanche and Jeanne Binet
- ↑ Marriage record not found, but confirmed by church records of their children`s baptisms and a datestone at Coutanche Farm: "RCT ♥ MMG 1725"
- ↑ Marriage record not found, but confirmed by his will and church records of the baptism of their children. Amyce`s will, dated and proved in 1772, names Rachel Pinel and Mr Philip (sic) Pinel as joint-executors and provides, after a bequest to the poor, modest legacies to his sons Amyce and Charles, and to his daughters Marie, Rachel and Judith. His daughter Anne (1750- ) is not mentioned, so may have predeceased her father. Rachel was not previously displayed on this page as a daughter, as her baptism has yet to be found. Her name is featured in the will between those of her sisters Marie (1732) and Judith (1744). She is likely to have been born in about 1738: D/Y/A/12/39, at Jersey Archive
- ↑ Amyce`s will, dated 30 April 1809 and proved 25 September 1810, provides an approximate date for his death. His wife, Jeanne Marett, and Philippe Nicolle were the executrix and executor of the will. He left a third of his chattels to be divided between "his four children" - "his sons Charles Coutanche and Jean Coutanche" and his daughters Jeanne and Marie. His son, Philippe (1774- ), seems to have predeceased his father, without issue: D/Y/A/18/25, at Jersey Archive. Amice`s godparents were: Philippe Pinel, Jean Marett and his wife, Marie Pinel
- ↑ Daughter and co-heiress of Pierre, Rector of Trinity, 1729-1765. Jeanne married, secondly, Philippe Le Gros of Les Cateaux, Trinity: ABSJ, VII, 396-7
- ↑ Captain in the Militia (1802). Datestone at Coutanche Farm has: CCT ♥ ILB 1812
- ↑ Of La Presse, St Peter
- ↑ The bride and groom were thus maternal first cousins. Jeanne Le Bas`s godparents in 1772 were Amice Coutanche and Jeanne Marett, his wife
- ↑ Of Maupertuis, St Clement, Farmer: 1841 Census, Samares. Living with him were his wife, son John, and daughters Jeanne, Marguerite and Elizabeth, and his widowed mother, Jeanne, née Le Bas
